How To Choose Tablecloths - Understanding Correct Measurements
We decided to tackle the challenges and questions related to calculating what size table linen is needed to create that perfect drape for your table. Since a tablecloth is intended to cover the entire table, all the way to the floor, a simple measurement of solely the length or diameter will not suffice. To make it easier we will focus on the three most popular types available - round, rectangular and cocktail tables.
Let us start with the most popular tables, which are the round banquet tables. These tables come in two standard sizes; the 5 foot round and 6 foot round. We have had a lot of customers trying to figure out what size tablecloths they need by the head count per table. It’s hard to know the exact size needed solely based on the head count per table. The reason why it’s so difficult to figure out the correct size is because we live in a multi-cultural world where customs and norms are as diverse and unique as we are. Some of us prefer to sit close to each other because that is the standard of our cultures, while others favor sitting apart to have mobility and comfort. Since we got that out of the way, we can finally figure out just how to get the correct size. All the standard banquet tables have a height of 30 inches (in). The next step is to figure out the diameter of the table. Those of you that are a little fuzzy about math, a diameter is a straight line going from one side of a circle all the way to the other. Here is a picture to demonstrate:
After measuring the diameter, you are finally ready to add everything together to get the correct size for a round table. As an example, let’s say the table’s diameter is 5 feet, which is the same as 60 inches (1 foot = 12 inches). Your calculation will be 60 in (diameter) + 30 in (height of table from one side) + 30 in (height of table from the other side) = 120 in. Since the tablecloth will be covering the entire table you need to add the height of the table twice, one for each side. It is that simple! For a 5 ft. table, you will need a 120 in round tablecloth to cover the table to the floor.
Calculating the correct size for a rectangular table is very similar to the round table, with a small modification. For the round tablecloths all the sides are the same size, while with the rectangular, you have to calculate the length and width separately. The formula still stays the same. Let’s start with the width of a rectangular table. The height still stays the same as the round tables because all the heights for the banquet tables are standard, it will remain 30in. Additionally, almost all rectangular tables have a width of 30 in. Adding everything together, 30 in (width of the table) + 30 in (height of table from one side) + 30 in. (height of table from the other side) = 90 in for the tablecloth width.
The length of the rectangular tablecloth needed is calculated relatively the same. Measure the length of the table, the standard sizes are either 6 ft. or 8 ft., and the height of the sides remains the same, 30 in. As an example let’s calculate for the 6 ft. table, which is the same as 72 in (1 foot = 12 in). This will be 72 in (length of the table top) + 30 in (height of table from one side) + 30 in. (height of table from the other side) = 132 in. The 132 in will be the length of the tablecloth you need for a 6 ft. table.
Simply put, you will need a rectangle tablecloth that measures 90” x 132” for your 6 ft. rectangular table.
The last table we will be measuring is the cocktail table (also known as highboy tables). The calculation for the perfect size is exactly the same as for the round banquet table, the only difference will be the dimensions. The typical diameter for the cocktail table is 30 in or 36 in, while the standard height is 42 in. Adding everything together, 36 in (diameter) + 42 in (height of table from one side) + 42 in. (height of table from the other side) = 120 in. You can either purchase a tablecloth that measures 120 in round or go with a 36 in round fitted spandex cocktail table cover, which is specifically made for this table.
